YouTube creators don't need hundreds of thousands of users to start making money or turn gigs into a profitable business.

Creators must be members of the YouTube Partner Program to take advantage of the monetization features of the platform. To start monetizing YouTube directly, creators must meet the threshold of 500 subscribers, three public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 watch hours in the past year or 3 million YouTube shorts views in the past 90 days. Once accepted, qualified creators can earn money through features like channel membership, super chat, super stickers, super thank you, and promoting their products on YouTube Shopping.

AdSense needs 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours in the last year to start monetizing YouTube creators.

This makes them eligible for a deduction from video ad revenue.

In February of this year, YouTube replaced the Short Form Fund and began sharing its short form revenue with creators. In an interview with

Amanda Wan, who has 8,500 YouTube users, said she shoots longer videos [10 to 15 minutes] to reach the required watch time.

The most common way for creators to monetize YouTube directly is by advertising through Google

Even small creators can make money. Jen Lauren, a YouTube creator with 5,000 subscribers, told that her channel made $349 a month from ads.

YouTube creator Shelby Church told that she likes to have four video ads longer than 10 minutes that help increase her monthly revenue.

Here are some of the different types of ads you can add to your YouTube videos:

  • Ads that appear in the upper-right corner of the video, above the list of video instructions.
  • Overlay ad that appears as a banner below the video.
  • Bumper ads are non-skippable ads that viewers must watch before watching a video. These ads last 6 seconds or less.
  • A support card showing the video content to the right of the video.
  • Mid-roll ads that can be inserted into videos longer than 10 minutes. They may or may not skip ads. Creators can decide whether they want YouTube to have partial ads or have them run it themselves.

When these ads start making money, the creators will receive a check from YouTube after making at least $100.

Creators who make money on YouTube should keep in mind that they must pay taxes on their income from the platform.

So how much money do creators make on YouTube?

Advertisers pay a YouTube percentage (CPM) for every 1,000 ad views. YouTube gets 45% of long videos, creators take the rest. YouTube's main monetization metric is called revenue per thousand (RPM), and it shows how much creators earn per 1,000 views after YouTube cuts. Some topics, such as personal finance, can reach a lucrative audience, increasing the creative value of the creator.

For paid short films, YouTube first generates short film advertising revenue, then pays record companies for unreleased music licenses, and creators receive 45% of the remaining revenue based on their percentage of all short films on the platform.
